GM's XV8 was presented at the 2001 Frankfurt International Motorshow.
The 4.3L V8 engine was designed from the ground up by General Motors
to showcase a range of new and innovative technologies including
Orbital's air assist DI system.
The all-aluminum 4.3-liter XV8 utilizes a unique
three-valves-per-cylinder combustion chamber configuration allowing
for the optimal placing of the Orbital air-assisted direct fuel
injection system. A highly integrated air compressor is packaged
into the design. This technology intensive engine also featured
variable intake systems, variable inlet valve timing, cam phasing
and displacement-on-demand confirming that Orbital's DI is mutually
compatible with other advanced engine technologies.
The XV8 was demonstrated in the Opel Signum
concept car, highlighting the power and smoothness of a premium
V8, the fuel efficiency of a V6, and packaging the width and the
length of a four-cylinder.
