Orbital promotes the use of a spray-guided, central injection configuration
as the optimal combustion system to meet both the challenges of
automotive emissions legislation and customer demands for improved
fuel economy, in both Europe and the USA.

The spray-guided OCP configuration
maintains the spark plug gap directly in the fuel spray ensuring:
- Higher levels of in-cylinder stratification
- Consistent ignitability and robust
combustion
- Better fuel economy (10-15% compared
to PFI)
- Lower engine-out emissions (compared
to other DI systems)
Lower engine-out emissions provides cost
savings for automotive applications through:
- Simpler catalyst configurations
- Improved cold engine emissions
- Lower Platinum Group Metal (PGM) loading
- Lower dependence on lean NOx catalysts
- Lower reliance on forced NOx and sulfur
regeneration cycles
The potential of OCP technology
in automotive applications has been independently verified on Orbitals
in-house Euro IV capable demonstrator as well as being showcased
in a number of customer demonstrators. OCP is the technology
benchmark when it comes to gasoline direct injection.
